Adapted from Appendix 1 and Note 105 (p.299) of Shtilmark F.R. History of the Russian Zapovedniks 1895-1995, Edinburgh: Russian Nature Press, 2003. With additional material from Russian Conservation News.
CURRENT ZAPOVEDNIKS OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION - page 1: A-J
Continued on page 2 (K-O) and page 3 (P-Z).
Dr Feliks Shtilmark spent many years planning and exploring potential sites for zapovedniks, including Azas, Komsomolsk, Little Sosva, Taymyr and Yugan; he writes about his experiences in his two books Tayezhnyye Dali (1972) and Lukomore - gde ono? (1993).
The history of the former Kondo-Sos'va Zapovednik is described in his Na sluzhbe nauke i prirode (2002).
101 zapovedniks (strict nature reserves) are currently operating in the Russian Federation; others in planning stage are also listed. Further details of many are available at the Center for Russian Nature Conservation.
The author gives, for each zapovednik (information from Ministry of Environment, Russian Federation):
- the first name as used in his book, followed by alternative English names or adjectival extensions (eg Astrakhan(ski));
- whether it is a biosphere reserve (BR);
- the ministry or other body responsible if it is not simply the Russian Federation Environment Ministry or equivalent body;
- the republic or region in which the zapovednik is located;
- foundation year;
- area (thousands of hectares);
- the author's notes.
Additional information on which zapovedniks are included in UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sites is taken from Russian Conservation News no.40 (Fall 2005/Winter 2006).
The total area of the 101 zapovedniks created by 2006 is close to 28 million ha. (The 101st is Kologrivskiy Forest).
On the next line are habitat and other notes, mostly from Zabelina N.M., Isayeva-Petrova L.S. & Kuleshova L.V. Zapovedniks & National Parks of Russia, Moscow: Logata, 1998 (in Russian and English, with introductory essay to each region by F.R.Shtil'mark).
On the third line is the postal address, mostly from Zabelina et al., or updated from Russian Conservation News no.42 (Fall 2006/Winter 2007). Russian addresses are written from the general to the particular, and are given in that order here. Oblique lines separate the lines of the address, which should end with 'The Director' or his/her name, or for scientific matters the Deputy Director. Finish off with 'RUSSIA' at the bottom. Thus, address a letter concerning science to Altay Zapovednik as follows:
649154 Altay Republic
Turochakskiy r-n
Artybash
Altayskiy Zapovednik
Vyacheslav Trigubovich (Director)
[blank line]
RUSSIA.
Maps. A map has been added, with a grid. Coordinates are given for each zapovednik so that its position can, at least approximately, be located on the map.
Maps of the protected areas across the whole country, and also of each individual zapovednik, can be seen on the website of the Biodiversity Conservation Centre.
'Cedar' refers to five-needle pines, usually Siberian Pine P.sibirica, but P.koraiensis in Russian Far East.
'Stlanik' refers to another, closely-related five-needle pine, P.pumila, which forms a low scrub in mountains, usually above the tree line.
'Pine' generally refers to Scots Pine Pinus sylvestris.
