MAP OF ZAPOVEDNIKS

Coordinates are given as letter (easting) followed by number (northing). Where a zapovednik falls on a line, both squares are cited in the form 'K06/07'. Where a zapovednik occupies sites in more than one square, they are given in the form 'L10,L11,L12'.

The dotted lines show the approximate positions of the main natural-vegetation zones. From north to south they are: tundra (treeless, typically dwarf shrubs, sedges, mosses); taiga (boreal forest, mainly coniferous), very broad in the east; a discontinuous deciduous-forest zone; and steppe (dry and semi-desert near the Caspian Sea, e.g. B06). The boundaries between the zones are very approximate, and there are transitional zones (forest-tundra; mixed forest; forest-steppe).
